Is your Windows 2003 server shutting down slowly after installing Exchange 2003? This happens with Exchange 2003/2000, because Active Directory services shut down before Exchange services shut down. It happens more often on Exchange 2003 because service shutdown in Windows 2003 has been accelerated.
Resolving Your Systems Slow Shutdown
To resolve the issue, shutdown Exchange services using a batch command, before shutting down the server.
net stop “Microsoft Exchange System Attendant” /y
Stop WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service service manually, before you shutdown the server.
net stop “WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service” /y
Then, decrease the value of WaitToKillServiceTimeout in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\WaitToKillServiceTimeout
The default value of WaitToKillServiceTimeout is: 600,000 and should be changed to a lower number. The best value should be found by experimenting with lowering this value.
*Note: Changing the value of WaitToKillServiceTimeout may impact other services in the system. This change is not supported by Microsoft.
*Also Note: You may need to install the latest Exchange 2003 Service Pack to resolve this issue completely.
