Dedicated server hosting provider, Hivelocity, announced this week they have further enhanced their multi-homed network by enabling intelligent route optimization technology. Offered as a subscription service from Internap, the route optimization technology allows Hivelocity to take full advantage of the routing paths and peering of all four of its upstream providers, which include Level 3, Global Crossing, Time Warner Telecom and Cogent. Since early March when the technology was deployed, data has been flowing from the Hivelocity network faster than ever before.
Most hosting providers that can tout having a multi-homed network typically utilize only Border Gateway Protocol (BGP4) routing when choosing data paths. What makes Hivelocity’s optimized routing abilities superior from simple BGP4 is the route optimization technology’s consideration of historical traffic routing data, real time Internet congestion and real time provider outages when choosing a final route for the data to flow. If any problems are detected on the initial path, the route optimization technology will simply reroute the traffic to the upstream network that provides the best performance and availability at that point in time.
“In laymen’s terms, our routers will always utilize the quickest path available among our four carriers to pass traffic to its final destination,” says Hivelocity General Manager Steve Eschweiler. “Right now our customers should notice traffic from their servers and web sites moving faster than ever. Hivelocity announced this week that is has completed the replacement of every battery in its power backup UPS system. The Hivelocity battery backup system consists of 3 battery banks. The first battery bank is the primary with the other two being redundant banks. The old battery banks were nearing end of life and the time had come for them all to be replaced with new 12 volts. The new backup system is configured to allow for a handful of batteries to fail on any or all banks without any interruption in power.
“We will be posting some pictures of the new battery setup on our site within the data center tour very soon” says Hivelocity GM Steve Eschweiler. "We are happy to have this task completed. Reliable power is paramount for us, and these new batteries certainly give us peace of mind."
Hivelocity has added both Level 3 and Time Warner Telecom to its list of bandwidth carriers this week. The addition of these two carriers further enhances the global reach of Hivelocity’s network. By adding these 2 carriers Hivelocity now boasts a network consisting of four of the largest and most recognized transit carriers in the world. The inclusion of Level 3, Time Warner, Global Crossing and Cogent will equate to great ping times and tracerts to the Hivelocity network across the globe. With customers from nearly 100 countries, having a strong and diverse network is imperative.
“Our goal is to build a network that limits no person from any country, state or province around the world from starting a relationship with Hivelocity. By bringing on Level 3 and TWTC this week, we took a major step towards completing that goal,” says Hivelocity GM Steve Eschweiler. “Once we turn up our FCP routing module in early 2010, we will have accomplished our goal of having one of the premier networks in the business.”
With Level 3 and Time Warner online, Hivelocity now has 28 Gbps of total bandwidth capacity. Hivelocity offers customers port speeds up to 1Gbps and specializes in unmetered bandwidth.
Dedicated Server provider Hivelocity (www.hivelocity.net) announced in late August the launch of their much anticipated new website. Customers have been buzzing for months about the new site after Hivelocity’s monthly newsletter hinted about the upcoming launch back in March. After several revisions the new site has finally made its way to customers and the general public.

March 28, 2008 – (HOSTSEARCH.COM) – Web host Hivelocity (http://www.hivelocity.net) has announced the launch of Dedicated KVM-over-IP units to “all of its dedicated server accounts”, it was reported yesterday. From this point forward, Lantronix SecureLinx Spider KVM can be fitted to any of Hivelocity’s servers for a monthly fee. The company is promoting the new option by canceling server setup fees until April 15, 2008.
KVM-over-IP enables up to 8 users to have full simultaneous BIOS-level control of a server through keyboard, video, and mouse - hence the name, KVM. Each connects directly to a server and allows full access from a web browser.
“Some people rely on our support team for everything, some people like the idea of relying only on themselves,” explained Steve Eschweiler, General Manager of Hivelocity. “Allowing any server to have permanent KVM-over-IP access will satisfy those customers who crave 100% control of their server.”
