Unless you missed the internet in the last few weeks you are now familiar with the infamous ShipYourEnemiesGlitter.com site. I for one first heard of it on the Today Show two weeks ago pondering my daily commute, then on Reddit while pretending to work, then at the water cooler while deliberately not working and lastly on the nightly news while wondering where the day went. The #glitterbomb was officially viral and the herpes of the craft industry was all over me with no ointment in sight.
You can imagine my surprise when I heard our sales reps discussing a solution for ShipYourEnemiesGlitter.com upon my arrival to the data center the following day. How bad is this outbreak? As fate would have it, the new owner of ShipYourEnemiesGlitter, Peter Boychuk, was on the phone looking for a solution that could handle the masses. People love themselves some glitter bombs and the preexisting MediaTemple solution was no longer the best option. It was quickly determined that a dedicated server from Hivelocity was the answer. Within a few hours we had our newest celebrity customer up and running on a quad-core Haswell Xeon with an Intel solid state drive. Enemies across the globe shivered with fear.
We followed up with Peter yesterday now that he has been in the Glitter as a Service business for a few weeks to see how things are progressing. “Business has been steady and constant. Of course sales will settle down from the initial viral surge, but so far it seems there is a consistent demand,” Peter explained. According to Peter, GaaS is only in its infancy. “We are working on adding new products, improving the site and developing an app. We are working on many different angles to make SYEG the best glitter service available.”
As I write this blog the media frenzy for the new infamous site has only steepened. For every article that was written introducing us to the kitschy new site and service, there is now a follow up article written about the entire site and service being a ruse. Peter has assured us, however, GaaS is no ruse and glitter bombs are here to stay. “Those stories are deceiving because they tend to put a bad light on what was a genius marketing plan for a legitimate company. If a business was successfully propelled by quirky marketing, it doesn't make the businesses any less respectable. We are fulfilling orders and supporting our customers. There is no deception happening at all.”
I for one am relieved by Peter’s proclamation because I have a few enemies in mind who are in desperate need of a glitter facial. Check your mail with caution @leftshark, @ISIS and @KimKardashian. The craft herpes are coming for you.
